Welcome
Welcome to Neuro Trauma Training
This course has been developed as part of a larger research project, it is therefore important that you have completed the pre-course survey before starting the training. Please contact us if you haven’t done this yet.
In this course, we will be exploring the impact of early childhood experiences on brain development. The course focuses on a set of mental skills known as Executive Function. This is the collective name for a set of higher-level skills which humans use to interact with the world around them. The development of these skills can be affected by experiences in early life, especially abuse, neglect and trauma, which are often experienced by children and young people in the care system.
Over the course of this training, you will complete four modules that will help you to understand the concept of Executive Function and its importance for the children and young people you work with.
The four modules are:
- Brain and Behaviour
- Understanding Executive Function
- Executive Functioning Difficulties
- Strategies to help
Each module should take about an hour, but you may complete this more quickly or slowly, so take it at your own pace. By the end of all four modules you should be able to:
- Understand the basic physiology and systems of the brain and how they develop.
- Understand the basic principles of Executive Function.
- Understand why Executive Function is important in relation to care-experienced children’s early experiences.
and
- Consider how Executive Function difficulties may appear in care-experienced children and how you could support children with these difficulties.
